2024 T351 T4 Aluminum Alloy

2024 aluminum sheet is a typical duralumin alloy in the aluminum-copper-magnesium family. Its well-designed composition and excellent overall performance make it a widely used duralumin alloy.

This alloy exhibits excellent formability in the hot, annealed, and freshly quenched states, and heat treatment strengthens it significantly, though this requires stringent processing. At temperatures above 125°C, its strength surpasses that of 7075 aluminum alloy, with a tensile strength of 425-470 MPa and a hardness range of HB40 to HB145. However, its corrosion resistance is poor, requiring pure aluminum cladding for protection. It is prone to cracking during welding, but riveting or specialized welding techniques are acceptable.

High strength and toughness: aluminum alloy 2024 t351 undergoes a specific heat treatment process to achieve high strength and toughness. It can withstand significant external forces without deformation or fracture, and maintains excellent structural integrity even under complex loads.

Excellent heat resistance: It maintains stable performance even in high-temperature environments, making it suitable for operating parts below 150°C. This characteristic makes it suitable for use in certain industrial applications with temperature requirements.

Processing advantages: It is suitable for processing thick plates, rolled or cold-finished bars, die forgings, forged rings, or rolled rings that are stretched to a specified amount after solution heat treatment or cooling from high-temperature forming. Post-stretching straightening is not performed, and the permanent set is 1%-3%, facilitating subsequent processing. Its Brinell hardness is HB120-145, its electrical conductivity is 30 at 20°C, its resistivity at 20°C is 48 n.m, its elastic modulus is 68, its elongation is 12%, and its fatigue strength is 105. These performance indicators strongly support its processing and use.

Applications

Excellent formability: It exhibits excellent formability in the hot, annealed, and freshly quenched states, making it advantageous in the manufacture of products requiring complex forming processes, such as parts that can be formed into various shapes through processes like stamping and bending.

Significant heat treatment strengthening: Consistent with the overall properties of 2024 alloy, 2024 t4 aluminum sheet exhibits significant heat treatment strengthening. Appropriate heat treatment processes can further enhance the material's performance potential and improve its usability. Its hardness is generally around HB120-145, similar to that of the T351 state, but with some differences in other performance details.

Applications

2024-T351 vs. 2024-T4

Strength and toughness: 2024-T351 offers superior combined strength and toughness. After undergoing specific stretching processes and heat treatment, its internal structure enables it to withstand higher loads and more complex stress states. Its toughness is also relatively improved, making it less susceptible to brittle fracture under impact loads.


While 2024-T4 also offers higher strength, it is slightly less tough, focusing more on meeting general strength requirements and forming process requirements.


Processability: 2024-T4 exhibits significant formability advantages in the hot, annealed, and freshly quenched states, making it easier to form complex shapes.


While 2024-T351 also offers good processability, its forming process is more focused on processing specific thick plates, bars, and die forgings. In applications requiring extremely complex forming, T4 may offer advantages.

Heat Resistance: 2024-T351 offers superior heat resistance and can operate stably below 150°C, making it suitable for manufacturing components in high-temperature environments.


In contrast, 2024-T4 is not as outstanding in heat resistance as T351, and its applicable temperature range is relatively narrow. Long-term use in high-temperature environments may affect its performance.

Application Comparison

Aerospace: In the aerospace sector, 2024-T351 is preferred for critical load-bearing components with extremely high structural integrity and reliability requirements, such as the aircraft's main load-bearing frame and important connecting bulkheads, due to its superior strength and toughness.

On the other hand, for components with high formability requirements but less extreme strength demands, such as aircraft skin, 2024-T4 performs well, meeting the skin's strength requirements while enabling complex design through excellent formability.

Other Industrial Sectors: In the automotive industry, 2024-T351 is often used for components with high strength and durability requirements, such as truck wheels. In some general machinery manufacturing, the strength requirements for structural parts are not particularly high, but products that require more forming processing, such as some small machinery housings and simple brackets, 2024-T4 becomes a more suitable choice due to its good formability and appropriate strength.
