6061 aluminum sheet is an economical, lightweight and medium-strength alloy. Its main alloy elements are Si, Mg, Mn,Ti, Zn,Cu, Fe,etc. Compared with other alloys, it has higher corrosion resistance. It also has good mechanical properties and is easily welded.
In aerospace industry, 6061 aluminum alloy is used for wing, fuselage structures and other non-critical aircraft parts, such as seat rails, handles and aircraft landing pads. It is especially common in homebuilt aircraft.
Because of its corrosion resistance and light weight, it is often used for aviation interior parts and aircraft container.
It is also an economical choice for the ultralight aircraft emphasizing safety, economy and comfort. Ultralight aircraft usually refers to a small general-purpose aircraft driven by a propeller, with a crew of no more than 2 people, and a maximum take-off weight of no more than 480kg. Most of them are made of aluminum alloy, nylon cloth, balsa wood, hard foam and other materials, and then can fly with a small engine of dozens of horsepower.

6061-O temper has maximum ultimate tensile strength no more than 150 MPa, maximum yield strength no more than 80MPa and elongation of 10–18%.
6061-T4 temper has maximum ultimate tensile strength no more than 180 MPa, maximum yield strength no more than 110 MPa and elongation of 10–16%.
6061-T6 temper has maximum ultimate tensile strength of at least 290 MPa, maximum yield strength of at least 240 MPa that is higher than certain types of stainless steel.
