6061 sheet metal is one of the common extruded alloys. Its mechanical properties make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. It is particularly suitable for applications such as building materials, railway vehicles, furniture, electrical products, aircraft parts, etc.
In contrast to casting alloys, it is a forging alloy. Therefore, it can be extruded, rolled or forged into various shapes. 6061 aluminum is of medium to high strength. It also has good corrosion resistance, weldability, and workability. Tempering can improve its strength and corrosion resistance.
Generally, 6061 aluminum is subjected to solution heat treatment and then aging treatment. 6061-T4 Aluminum undergoes natural aging treatment, while 6061-T6 undergoes artificial aging treatment to achieve higher strength.
6061 and 7075 Alloy
One of the main factors for choosing 7075 aluminum sheet is its high strength. It forms an alloy with zinc and is stronger than 6061. But its corrosion resistance is lower than 6061, and welding is more difficult. 7075 aluminum is used in marine, automotive and aerospace applications.
6061 and 6063 Aluminum
6061 aircraft aluminum has higher strength than 6063 aluminum. Therefore, 6061 aluminum is often used for structural parts while 6063 aluminum is often used for railings, decorations, windows and doors.
6061 and 5052
The main alloys of 6061 aluminum are magnesium and silicon, while the main alloys of 5052 aluminum are magnesium. One of the main advantages of 5052 aluminum sheet is its high weldability compared with other alloys. But 5052 aluminum can not be heat treated. It is mainly used for marine applications due to its high corrosion resistance.
6061 and 2024
2024 alloy is well known for high strength, mainly used in aerospace applications. Although it is strong and has good fatigue resistance, compared with 6061 aircraft aluminum, its machinability and weldability are worse. It also has poor corrosion resistance, and is usually used in wing and fuselage structures that bear high tension.
