What Are High Strength Aluminum Alloys

Aerospace aluminum is an ultra-high strength deformed aluminum alloy that is currently widely used in the aviation industry. Compared with ordinary aluminum alloys, aluminum alloys used in aircraft have higher requirements for strength, hardness, toughness, fatigue resistance, and plasticity.

2024 aluminum is one of the high strength alloys, with copper and magnesium as the main elements. The most commonly used temper designs include 2024T3, 2024T351, 2024T4, 2024 T6 and 2024T4. The corrosion resistance of the 2xxx series alloys is not as good as most other aluminum alloys, and intergranular corrosion may occur under certain conditions.

2219 aluminum alloy is a high-strength aluminum alloy with high yield strength and tensile strength. It is often used in the manufacture of aerospace, automotive parts, building structures and other fields.

7075 aluminum is one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys with the highest strength. This alloy has been used in the aircraft manufacturing industry in the aviation field in the late 1940s, and it is still an ultra-high strength deformable aluminum alloy widely used in the aviation industry.

The most important Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy is 7075 aluminum alloy, which has the highest strength in T6 state, but the lowest fracture toughness, and poor corrosion resistance (especially intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion resistance). In order to enhance its corrosion resistance, it needs to be aged. The most common treatment is T73, that is, firstly solid solution treatment of the aluminum alloy, and then double-stage aging treatment.

Although 6000 series aluminum alloys such as 6061 and 6063 have low strength, they have good ductility and are often used in machine frame and frame structural parts, bolt components and door and window frames.

The hard strength of 6061 aluminum is 316Mpa and soft strength is 127Mpa, because 6061 aluminum alloy contains a higher proportion of magnesium and silicon elements, so it has higher strength and hardness. 6063 hard strength is 295Mpa, soft strength is 111Mpa; in comparison, 6063 aluminum alloy is relatively soft, has good ductility and plasticity, and is easy to process. Therefore, if higher strength and hardness are required, 6061 aluminum alloy is more suitable; if good plasticity and processing performance are required, 6063 aluminum alloy is more suitable.

6063 aluminum alloy has several different tempering grades: 6063-T6, 6063-T651, 6063 T7351 and 6063-O. 6063 t6 grade aluminium is used in applications where strength is not so high, and the main form is generally aluminum sheet and aluminum bar.
