Al-Cu-Mg alloy is one of the most important alloy series in heat-treatable aluminum alloys. The most widely used alloy in aircraft structures is 2024 aluminum alloy. The main strengthening phase of this alloy is S phase (CuMgAl2), followed by θ phase (CuAl2), and it is usually used in T3 state.
2024 aluminum alloy generally has a hardness of about HB120 after T3 heat treatment. After more stringent T351 or T4 heat treatment, the hardness may be higher, reaching about HB140. 2024 T351 alloy aluminum has high strength, good cutting performance, high strength, heat resistance, good spot welding, and significant heat treatment strengthening effect. Anodizing and painting methods are used or an aluminum layer is added to the surface to improve its corrosion resistance.
6061 aluminum alloy is a high-quality aluminum alloy product produced by heat treatment pre-stretching process. Although its strength cannot be compared with 2xxx series or 7xxx series, it has many magnesium and silicon alloy characteristics, and has excellent processing performance, excellent welding characteristics and electroplating, good corrosion resistance, high toughness and no deformation after processing, dense material without defects and easy polishing, easy color film, excellent oxidation effect and other excellent characteristics.
6063 aluminum has excellent corrosion resistance, similar to 6061. It can also be heat treated and can be anodized to further improve its corrosion resistance as well as aesthetics. The most common form is heat treated 6063 T5, which has a high degree of corrosion resistance and surface wear resistance.
7075 aircraft aluminum sheet is one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys with the highest strength. 7075 heat treatment such as double-stage (graded) aging can also improve the alloy's ability to resist stress corrosion cracking. Double-stage aging refers to the method of aging 7075 alloy at a lower temperature and then aging it again at a higher temperature to improve the alloy's strength and toughness and reduce its tendency to stress corrosion cracking.
