What Is The Toughest Aluminum Sheet

7xxx aluminum alloy has the toughest aluminum alloy among all aluminum alloys, so it is suitable for the aerospace field. The yield strength of 7 series aluminum alloy is usually between 300-500MPa, which can effectively resist deformation and deformation caused by external loads. The alloy has good heat treatment performance and corrosion resistance. Its strength and hardness can be significantly improved by heat treatment, while its corrosion resistance is improved.

7075 aluminum plate is one of the strongest aluminum alloys, and its strength is comparable to that of iron-based metal materials. The main heat treatment states of 7075 aluminum plate are O, T6, T651, T73, and T76. The static strength of the T6 temper is the highest, and the strength of the T73 temper is the lowest, but it has high fracture toughness and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and exfoliation. The performance of the T76 temper is between T6 and T73.

7075 alloy provides only average corrosion resistance, which is a result of the small amount of copper included in its chemical composition. It also has the characteristics of good machinability, poor formability and weldability. Another disadvantage of this alloy is that it has a relatively high cost relative to other aluminum alloys.

2000 series aluminum alloys mainly use Cu as the main alloying element. The alloys prepared by adding an appropriate amount of Cu element to aluminum alloy materials will have better improvements in strength, heat resistance and processing performance, but the corrosion resistance will be reduced, because the introduction of Cu element will make the aluminum alloy more prone to intergranular corrosion. The composition elements directly affect the performance of aluminum alloys.

2024 aluminum alloy is a high-strength duralumin. What are duralumin alloy uses? 2024 aluminum alloy can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has moderate plasticity in the quenched and just-quenched conditions. Because of its high strength, it is generally used to produce aircraft structural parts, such as skins, wing spars, etc.

Both alloys offer similar weldability. Spot welding or flash welding can be used, but arc welding and gas welding are not recommended. They both have similar machinability. 2024 alloy has slightly better machinability, while 7075 aluminum has slightly better corrosion resistance.

2024-T3 is one of the most widely used alloys in airframe structures. It has a moderate yield strength, very good resistance to fatigue crack growth and good fracture toughness. For airframe applications, 2524-T3 alloy has a 15-20% improvement in fracture toughness and twice the fatigue crack growth resistance of 2524-T3.
